The Cyprus Question is an eight-minute animated film presenting a historical timeline outlining the formation of the Republic of Cyprus and the political developments surrounding the Cyprus Question. Developed by one and a half Animation Studio for the Press and Information Office of Cyprus, the film was created as a public information piece intended for institutional communication, diplomatic contexts and educational use. To support international communication, the film was translated into multiple languages for use across diplomatic and public information platforms.

The project required extensive historical research and the careful selection of archival references to construct a clear and balanced narrative timeline. Drawing from contemporary explanatory documentary formats, the animation combines archival imagery, motion graphics and restrained animated elements to translate complex political developments into a structured visual narrative.
The Cyprus Question refers to the ongoing political and territorial dispute surrounding the island of Cyprus, shaped by the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960, intercommunal tensions and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, which led to the division of the island. Since then, multiple diplomatic initiatives and negotiations have sought a comprehensive settlement, and the issue remains an ongoing international effort.

The film’s narration was developed with an approachable and conversational tone, avoiding didactic or overly authoritative delivery. The voice-over remains calm and measured, with subtle emotional emphasis placed only on key historical moments. This approach allows the historical material to remain accessible while maintaining the gravity of the subject.
Visually, the film balances archival still imagery with gentle motion and carefully paced transitions. A restrained stop-motion sensibility and continuous micro-movement prevent visual stagnation while respecting the integrity of historical photographs and documents. Where relevant archival footage was available, it was integrated selectively to reinforce specific moments in the narrative. Together with the narration, this approach establishes a steady rhythm that sustains viewer engagement across a subject built largely from historical still material.

Projects addressing complex historical subjects require clarity, balance and careful visual interpretation. In this context, animation functions as a structured communication tool. By combining archival references, cartographic material and restrained motion design, the film translates historical information into a visual narrative while respecting the accuracy and sensitivity of the subject.
Within institutional and public communication, this approach allows complex political and historical material to be presented with clarity and responsibility. Animation supports understanding by organising timelines, highlighting key moments and providing visual continuity where archival material alone may be fragmented or difficult to follow.
This project forms part of the studio’s broader body of work in documentary, cultural and public communication contexts. Explore more projects on our Work page.
